Microblog: Cortisol Impacts Thyroid & Sex Hormones (Part 2)

Watch the clip here.   Continuing from the last post. If we have blood sugar issues, the entire hormone system (endocrine system) will prioritize cortisol to help you survive another day.   Hypothyroid and hormone imbalances are not root cause. Oftentimes it’s something to do with an excess tap on cortisol.   Cortisol is a necessary hormone, it’s when we use it in excess that it is not ideal. Cortisol’s role is: Blood sugar regulation Inflammation reduction Metabolism regulation Memory formulation   So what are causes of chronic cortisol output? Blood sugar issues Stress Pituitary and adrenal gland issues (figure out why)   Other real life examples of chronic cortisol output: Undereating (includes excess fasting without proper refeeds) Over training and exercising Not enough dietary protein and fat Water damaged building (mold illness increases ACTH levels which affect cortisol) Life stressors and trauma (the body keeps the score)   I...

Microblog: Acute vs Chronic Stress

Our bodies are designed to handle acute stressors, not chronic stressors. When we are constantly stressed out, our health takes a hit.⠀   Chronic stress not only puts you in a constant flight or fight state which then impacts your ability to properly digest and absorb anything, but the hormones to manage stress also take priority over other functions in the body.⠀   We hear that stress causes us to gain weight.⠀   Increased cortisol in circulation INITIATES fat deposits in fat tissue, thus weight gain is common with excess cortisol. Yes, the cortisol that’s increased by 100% with just one day of sleep deprivation.⠀   Cortisol is a stress hormone from the adrenals and two of its primary functions are to anti-stress and anti-inflame. Yes, it causes the body to SUPPRESS the...

Microblog: Steroid and Cortisol Pathways (Part 1)

Watch the clip here.   The Carnivore community tends to get pulled by lean meats for body composition vs. high fat for hormones vs. carbs are necessary.   Too high of fat requires more calories. To hit 80% fat macros with sufficient protein will require A LOT of calories— for temporary healing it may be a tool but it’s not sustainable long term.   Lean meats don’t always work long term because hello, hormones. (This is when most people will start to throw in the carbs that were the issue from the beginning ).   So the the camp of “carbs are necessary.”   Really? Or is it that you were eating super lean protein or leaner meats for too long to hit a number on the scale, and now you’re paying for it with hormone and...

Microblog: US Dietary Guidelines Remove Dietary Cholesterol Upper Limits

DID YOU KNOW? Pre-2015, the US dietary guidelines recommended limits on fat and cholesterol.   Eggs and all fats were limited because of their cholesterol content.   In 2015, the US Dietary guidelines removed cholesterol upper limits and the 35% limit on total dietary fat.   Yes.   There are no dietary limits for cholesterol and dietary fat.   So why the removal?   There wasn’t enough scientific evidence and no significant relationship between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol.   Not only that, once the EU enacted a law to “secure clarity and fairness in clinical trials” (read: no conflicts of interests), the cholesterol-lowering medications showed INEFFECTIVE in preventing atherosclerotic disease.   CONSIDERATIONS If reducing cholesterol doesn’t prevent atherosclerotic disease (heart disease), why are we scared of saturated fat and animal fats?   The recommendation to lower dietary fats and cholesterol was also issued...

Microblog: Truth About Statins & Dietary Cholesterol

Watch the clip here.   Statins block an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase that then reduces cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol production in the body.   Supposedly, lowering total and LDL-cholesterol is considered important to reduce a person’s risk of developing heart disease or stroke. (NOTE: make sure to read my next post regarding this…TEASER: this isn’t necessarily true.)   SIDE EFFECTS OF STATINS Serious muscle effects have been reported with statins, including rhabdomyolysis (destruction of muscle cells). People 65+ taking certain meds, who drink more than 2 alcohol drinks daily, OR has kidney disease, may have more serious side effects.   Per drugs.com, mild muscle pain is a common side effect of statins. (oh, okay…)   Statins can affect the liver or cause jaundice. This may require discontinuation.   Statins can affect diabetes markers (HbA1c or fasting glucose), and may not...

Microblog: The Belief and Power of a Carnivore Diet

Watch the clip here.   Watch the full interview here.   When I first heard of Carnivore, I thought it was crazy. I thought people lost their minds.   I got to a point where I was DESPERATE and the incredible healing stories on a carnivore diet seemed worth exploring.   I planned for 2 weeks. But the healing was incredible. I started healing and 5 years later, I’m still here. And not only am I here, I’m now passionately advocating for an animal-based diet.   My husband also thought Carnivore was crazy. He was concerned when I started eating an all-meat diet. I already was struggling with an eating disorder and Carnivore seemed disordered.   But stories don’t lie.   As much as I share studies and support my information with evidence-based research, the motivation is in our stories.   We are...

Microblog: Judy’s Story as Being Plant-Based

Watch the clip here.   Watch the full interview here.   No one suffers alone. As humans we are connected to others, and when we hurt, someone else hurts.   Kevin never knew dating me was going to come with illness and hurt in our family. He thought I was healthy. I was taking care of myself on a plant-based diet for over a decade.   As time passed, he learned how sick I was and it gravely affected our family—when I say the worst fear of failing as a first time mom came true for us, it did. I was on a 72 hour mandatory lockdown hold (against my will) on the first new year’s eve my son was in this world.   The part I never share is that my husband, Kevin, had to take...

Microblog: Stress and the Impact on Gut Health

Watch the clip here.   Watch the full interview here.   How stress impacts gut health, blood pressure and more.   Aldosterone (an adrenal hormone) helps to manage blood pressure. And fight/flight mode causes less immune function— and more gut permeability.   Chronic stress does a body bad— even if your diet is good.   —    Full interview on YouTube. https://youtu.be/-XLKySV0-o8   Full interview on podcast: https://nutritionwithjudy.buzzsprout.com/...
