Rise in Obesity Post-Pandemic

Sent by JUDY CHO | August 20, 2022

In my last newsletter, I mentioned that it was interesting to see Dariush Mozaffarian listed at the end of the author list when he was one of the main contributors.

That is actually very normal.

I apologize for that mistake. You can read more about the order of authors here and here. Essentially the last person is usually the most senior person that takes some of the ownership of the article.

I will always stand corrected if I can improve and share more accurate information!

Last week I also shared how I wanted to do a Bill Gates reel. I dedicated time to make it and you can find it here.

This anti-meat message is blatantly wrong. We are being pushed anti-meat dietary recommendations when these same powers eat meat, and have major conflicts of interest with their heavy investments in plant-based companies.

Mind you that they are focusing on cows’ methane issues while they’re flying around the world on private jet planes.

It’s no different with Dr. Dariush releasing articles on how meat is bad and publishing the Tuft’s Food Compass Guide that advocates for foods he gets funded by. (He gets funded by a lot of plant-based companies).

Create a problem. Sell the solution.

It’s just plain wrong.

STUDY OF THE WEEK — Obesity Rising

Researchers found that obesity rose in adolescents aged 2 to 19 from 17.7% in 2011–12 to 21.5% from 2017–2020. Per the CDC, the rates have increased even more during the pandemic.

According to pediatrician, Dr. Amanda Stovall, “with school closures, cancellation of sports and activities, and less play dates, kids and parents alike have understandably become less active, spending more time at home.”

She also stated that screen time soared during the pandemic which can also contribute to obesity.

Or maybe diet plays the largest role.

You can read more about the “Trends in Obesity Prevalence Among Children and Adolescents Aged 2 to 19 Years in the US From 2011 to 2020here.

The differences are greater when broken down by race and ethnicity. When comparing 2011–12 to 2017–2020 data, obesity rates increased from:

  • 21.8% to 27% in Mexican Americans
  • 19.5% to 23.8% in non-Hispanic Blacks
  • 15% to 18.4% in non-Hispanic whites

If you compare socioeconomics, there is an even greater disparity.

This is why I’m an advocate of wellness for all.

Diet and wellness should not be limited to the affluent. There is a very unwell population that could do so much healing with just conventional ground beef, eggs, and butter (assuming they can tolerate these foods).

When we focus on proper nutrition and free play, we can let our children have a better chance at living their best lives. They may not need to be meat-only, but heavily meat-focused (with limited carbs) is best for combatting obesity.

Some of my very first NwJ articles are about children’s nutrition:

SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHLIGHT

Some people like eat raw.

That’s fine as long as you don’t get sick.

🎙Last week’s CATG episode, we talked about raw vs. cooked meat. And we talked these facts:

🥩In 1906, polar explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson found that for the Copper Inuit cooked nightly and that meat was always well cooked.

🍳In 1998, Bulgarian scientists did a study to find out how much protein is absorbed from eating raw eggs verses cooked eggs.

🍳The results showed that participants who ate cooked eggs digested 91–94% of the protein.

🥚Participants who ate raw eggs digested about 65% of protein from the eggs.

🌟Just cooking eggs, participants digested an additional 30% more protein from eggs than participants who ate them raw.

📖There was a study in 1987 on Heated vs Raw Protein Digestion.

🔎Researchers tested the degradation of the protein bovine serum albumin by the enzyme trypsin with and without heat.

🌟In cooked samples, digestion by the enzyme trypsin increased 4x compared to that of uncooked samples.

🔥Cooking denatures proteins
🔥Cooking softens connective tissues

Cooking decreases the energy cost of digestion
🔥Cooking reduced the cost of digestion by 12.7%

🔪Grinding reduced the cost of digestion by 12.3%

🔥🔪Cooking and grinding reduced the cost of digestion by 23.4%

🔥Cooking meat makes it more digestable by both reducing the amount of time and energy your body spends on digestion, and increasing the amount of energy you get from meat.

🙋🏻‍♀️Aside from the science, several of my clients that eat mostly raw have been having stomach issues. We found several things:

🧫They have E.Coli bacteria in their stool (even sourcing from grass finished farms)

🦠Some of them also had H.Pylori- could the cost of digestion and eating raw meats tax the gut for the breakdown of proteins?

❓Remember, most autoimmune is from a foreign protein that attacks the body. Could uncooked proteins be a harder stress on a sick body?

⛑Figure out what makes sense for your but raw isn’t always better.

Podcast Sponsor: Paleovalley

Paleovalley’s meat sticks are one of my favorite go-to snacks and also perfect for my boys’ lunchboxes. Since they are shelf-stable, I always carry Paleovalley meat sticks in my bag.

I love Paleovalley’s grass-finished beef sticks and pasture-raised turkey sticks because they support US Family farmers that focus on regenerative agriculture.

These meat sticks are from animals that have never been fed grains, corn, soy or GMOs. They’ve never been exposed to chemicals or pesticides, and have never been given antibiotics.

The spices in their sticks also are 100% organic.

Each stick is about $2 with our discount code and comes in a 10-pack bag. The sticks come in 5 different flavors.

Paleovalley’s meat sticks are a perfect snack and frankly, a great value without skimping on quality.

NwJ INSIDER TIPS

We just got clearance for our mold remediation after two weeks of living with really loud HEPA fans and air filters. (see the particle count in the images below)

It’s been raining the last couple of days and just for fun, we checked the area and it’s wet. I have no idea what this means for our mold remediation but we know that the outdoor rain is coming inside our house.

This is real life.

Another hiccup but we are keeping on.

Next week I share an interview with Michael Schrantz, who shares how to remediate and approach environmental mold in a very realistic, approachable way. I found it very comforting listening to him and also hopeful for my clients with big remediation projects.

One takeaway I gleaned from him is that I plan to do small particle cleaning with local move-in ready cleaners. The remaining cleaning we will do by ourselves. I can’t afford $10,000+ jobs for deep cleaning.

Note: I do not recommend anyone with severe mold illness or CIRS to do their own small particle cleaning. Health always comes first.

I firmly believe if there’s a will, there’s a way.

If it didn’t rain, we would have fixed up the house and never have known it was leaking. Mold would have ensued.

Luckily it rained in the middle of August, and now we know there’s a leak we need to seal so that we don’t get Aspergillus mold again.

We must always remain hopeful. Always.

Because this too shall pass.
